HARTFORD - The Van Buren County
Sheriff's Mounted Division will host the 48th annual Pony Express, June
13, at the Van Buren County fairgrounds, located at the corner of County
Road 681 and Red Arrow Highway, midway between Lawrence and Hartford. Donations raised from the event will go to two South Haven youngsters,
each facing medical issues. Alexis Edwards, who has cerebral palsy,
is a second grade student at Maple Grove School, in South Haven. The
other recipient, Kaiden Cole, is battling spinal bifida. She is a first
grade student at Maple Grove School. The two were selected as this
year's recipients by the state’s Sheriff’s Mounted Association.
Those wishing to participate in the Pony Express
may obtain special stationary and envelopes from one of four area post
offices, including Lawton, Lawrence, Gobles and Hartford. The letters can
also be returned to those locations along with donations.
Also in Hartford, stationary and envelopes may be
picked up and dropped off at Rice’s Sport Shop, Rick’s Tack and the Hair
Forum. In the South Haven area, all South Haven schools will act as
agents for stationary and envelopes.
According to Tina Streeter, a member of the Van
Buren County Sheriff’s Mounted Division, a minimum donation of $3 will
include the letter and a special 'Pony Express' postage stamp, which will
be affixed by the Mounted Division. With each stationary and
addressed enveloped returned to the pick-up sites by June 10, more than
100 area mounted posse men and women will travel June 13 on horse
from Lawton, Gobles, South Haven, Decatur, Dowagiac, and Sister Lakes,
with the final destination point of the Van Buren County fairgrounds.
Mounted members will ride into Hartford to
participate in the Strawberry Festival parade at 1:00 P.M.
The Sheriff’s Mounted Division will also hold a
raffle, featuring three prizes - first prize, a customized western trail
saddle, second prize - a Henry “Golden Boy” .22 rifle, and third prize, a
half-day chartered Lake Michigan fishing trip from Porterhouse Charters.
Raffle tickets are 5 for $10 and may be purchased
from any posse member, or the above Hartford business locations. The
drawing will be held the June 13, at the fairgrounds.
