Information:
Sheriff Dale R. Gribler reports that Mattawan police noted a pickup truck at
around 3:15 a.m. pull into a business located in the 23000 block of French
Road. Mattawan Officers investigating this noted two male subjects backed up to
metal scrap pile loading up their pickup truck with this material.
Sheriff deputies responded to the scene, as the
incident had occurred outside the Village of Mattawan’s limits to also
investigate. Investigation by both departments discovered that these two
subjects had attempted to utilize the late, dark hours to steal scrap metal from
this business. Officers were able to contact the business owner finding that he
did not know these subjects on his property, nor give them permission to take
the scrap metal.
Both subjects were arrested by officers and lodged in
the Van Buren county jail for larceny from a yard. The current rate for metal
being turned in for scrap is at around $150 a ton.

Seized:
several different components used in the manufacturing process of
methamphetamine
Information: Sheriff Dale. R. Gribler
reports that Van Buren County Sheriff Detectives from the Narcotics Unit were
called to the report of meth use at Lot 42. Consent to search the premises was
obtained.
A search of the home found three subjects and a
meth lab. The tenant of the home, subject #1 above, was on parole out of
Kalamazoo County. Kalamazoo Parole requested a detainer due to the meth lab
located in his bedroom.
The three subjects were interviewed regarding their
involvement in the meth lab and lodged at the Van Buren County Jail pending
authorization of charges by the Van Buren County Prosecutor in the morning.

Derrick Williams, 40 year old Mattawan Man.
Information: Sheriff
Dale R. Gribler reports that Van Buren county sheriff deputies, along with
additional emergency services personnel, were called to the 25000 block of M-43
highway in reference to a subject having fallen off a ladder and was
unresponsive.
Emergency personnel on scene noted the subject,
identified as 40 year old Derrick Williams of Mattawan, was deceased from severe
injuries sustained to his head. The investigation noted that it appears that
Williams was in the process of roof repairs to his home when, for reasons
unknown, he fell off his ladder approximately 20 feet to the ground.
Williams was found by a neighbor who had been returning
home from work this evening.
