Updated Court Information:
Bradley Michael Schoetzow, 27 year old
male from Dowagiac, was arraigned on July 13, 2009
in 7th District Court East, Paw Paw on the following charges:
#1 – OWI Causing Serious Injury - carries a 5 yr and/or
$1,000 to $5,000 fine.
#2 – Failing to Use Due Care When Passing Stationary
Emergency Vehicle Causing Injury to Emergency Personnel - carries a 2 yr and/or
$1,000 fine.
Preliminary Examination:
Set for July 22, 2009 in 7th
District Court East, Paw Paw. $5,000 surety bond was continued.

Deputies involved:
Deputy Stolsonburg and Deputy Konkle of the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office
Uniform Response Division.
Injuries to Deputies:
Deputy Konkle sustained injuries to both of his knees and legs and sustained
lacerations to both of his arms. He was transported by ambulance to
Bronson Lakeview Hospital for treatment.
Vehicle #1:
2008 Chevrolet Impala police vehicle. Unit sustained major rear end damage.
Suspect/injuries:
White Male, 26 years old man from Dowagiac, no injuries sustained. (name
withheld pending arraignment in Paw Paw district court).
Suspect vehicle: 2008 Chevrolet HHR passenger car
which sustained front end damage.
Alcohol:
Alcohol
is believed to be a factor in this traffic crash.
Information:
Sheriff Dale R.
Gribler reports that Van Buren County deputies were on a traffic stop on
Delaware near Mill street in the Village of Decatur. Deputies were investigating
the individuals in this vehicle that was stopped for possible alcohol
violations. One of the passengers from this vehicle was under investigative
detention, and was placed in the rear seat of the patrol vehicle while deputies
continued to evaluate the driver for a possible alcohol violation as well.
Deputy Matt Konkle proceeded to the trunk of the patrol vehicle to retrieve a
preliminary breath test kit to administer to this driver. It was during
this time, another vehicle hit the rear of the patrol unit pinning Deputy Konkle
between both cars. In order to free Deputy Konkle, the patrol car had to be
moved forwarded, to which his partner, Deputy Stolsonburg, began to give him
medical attention as further emergency personnel were called to the scene to
assist. Deputy Konkle, with injuries to both legs and other body trauma, was
transported by ambulance to Bronson/Lakeview Hospital in Paw Paw for treatment.
The suspect that crashed into the deputies was
determined to be highly intoxicated and was subsequently arrested for Operating
While Intoxicated causing personal injury. The subject that was seated in the
rear of the patrol unit was shaken but not injured. The driver and passenger in
the original vehicle stopped were not found to be intoxicated.
Deputy Konkle is in good condition, no broken bones and
is expected to be released this morning from the hospital as well.
