Sheriff Dale R. Gribler reports that the Van Buren
County Sheriffs Office Narcotics Detectives assisted the AFT Agents in
this federal investigation over the past few months. The investigation
has resulted in the indictment and arrest of Mr. Gray. Mr. Gray was
taken into custody on the indictment yesterday morning at his place of
business without incident. Mr. Gray made his appearance in the Grand
Rapids Federal Court.
LAWTON MAN FEDERALLY CHARGED WITH UNLICENSED
SALE OF FIREARMS
AND WITH SELLING A FIREARM TO A CONVICTED FELON
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Joseph Scott Gray, 40, of
Lawton, Michigan, was charged with two federal firearms offenses, U.S.
Attorney Donald A. Davis announced today. The first charge alleges that he
engaged in the business of selling firearms without a license between October
15, 2008 and July 31, 2009. This is a felony offense under federal law,
carrying a maximum possible penalty of five years in prison, a fine of
$250,000 and other penalties. The second charge against Gray is that he sold a
gun to a convicted felon in violation of federal law. This is also a federal
felony, carrying a maximum term of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 and
other penalties. Gray has been arrested and brought before Magistrate Judge
Joseph Scoville for his first appearance and released on a $15,000 bond.
U.S. Attorney Davis commended the Van Buren County
Sheriff Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and explosives
for its investigation of the case. This case is being prosecuted on behalf of
the United States by Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy P. VerHey.
The charges in an
indictment are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent
until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Information:
Sheriff Dale Gribler reports that the Van Buren County Detective Bureau
received a tip that two individuals were staying at a residence in Van Buren
County along with stolen property. The follow-up investigation linked the two
suspects (Howard & Tabor) to ten open investigations in Van Buren County
regarding stolen property, stolen vehicles, and a home invasion.
The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office, Paw Paw Police
Department, and the Michigan State Police (Paw Paw Post) had experienced a
dramatic increase in larcenies from motor vehicles, (3) motor vehicle thefts,
and a home invasion over a two day period of time from July 9, through July
10, 2009. On Friday, July 10, 2009, a Detective from the Kalamazoo Township
Police Department had informed the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office that he
had received a tip that Howard & Tabor were staying at a home in the 32,000
Block of 56th Avenue (Antwerp Township in Van Buren County).
The tip
information also stated that there was stolen property at the home as well.
Kalamazoo Township Police Department also had Howard & Tabor as suspects in
there investigation, along with several related cases being investigated by
Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office. The MO used by Howard & Tabor in the Van
Buren County cases was also the same MO being used in the Kalamazoo cases.
On July 10, 2009, Detectives and Deputies from the Van Buren
County Sheriff’s Office, along with a Kalamazoo Township Detective, made contact
at the residence and attempted contact with the two suspects. The suspects
(Howard & Tabor) fled on foot and a K9 track was utilized, however, they were
located. While officers were at the residence, property was observed linking
back to a Motor Vehicle theft earlier reported in Paw Paw on July 9, 2009.
A search warrant for the residence was drafted and
executed on July 10, 2009. Over 70 pieces of property was seized from the
residence which was matched back to the above mentioned complaints being
investigated by the three police agencies in Van Buren County. Additionally,
property was recovered from within the home linking back to cases being
investigated in Kalamazoo Township, Kalamazoo County. The cases in Kalamazoo
County are still being investigated.
On
July 24, 2009 the Van Buren County Prosecutor’s Office
authorized a Five Count Felony Warrant for each Howard & Tabor. Howard &
Tabor are currently incarcerated in the Kalamazoo County Jail after a short
foot chase in Oshtemo Township on July 14, 2009. The suspects will be brought to
Van Buren County for arraignment on the Van Buren County charges.
Criminal Charges:
Count #1-Receiving & Concealing Weapon. 10 year
Felony.
Count #2-Receiving & Concealing Stolen Property
$1,000.00 or more, but less than $20,000. 5 year Felony.
Count #3-Unlawful Driving Away of Motor Vehicle. 5
year Felony.
Count #4- Unlawful Driving Away of Motor Vehicle. 5
year Felony.

Narrative:
Sheriff Dale R. Gribler
reports that Van Buren county sheriff deputies and Paw Paw village police
department began receiving this date calls from persons having garage sales,
this of a person having passed or attempting to pass what they believed to be
counterfeit money. A customer at one of these sales, having heard talk of
persons questioning the suspect attempting to pass such bills, was able to
obtain the suspects license plate number. With this license plate number,
vehicle and suspect description provided to Law enforcement, officers began,
attempting to located the vehicle or suspect.
Shortly after receiving this information,
Van Buren county dispatch received a call from the Kalamazoo county sheriff’s
